What is dental implant surgery like?

Dental implant surgery is not a complicated process. Certainly, with current techniques, it’s a common procedure with no unforeseen problems. Implant surgery can take as little as half an hour in the simplest cases, is done in the clinic, in the implant dentist’s own office, with local anesthesia and the patient feels no pain.

Here at the ImplArt Clinic, we get a lot of questions from patients, especially about how dental implants are done in practice. So, to answer this and other questions about implant surgery, we’ve prepared this article to answer all your doubts about the treatment.

What is the best dental implant?

Today there are various types of dental implant with different technologies and healing times. There are even implants that heal in 30 days, called fast-healing implants, such as the Slactive implant, from the Swiss company Straumann, which is a fast-healing dental implant. In addition to this implant, there is the option of the ceramic implant, the only zirconia implant available on the market that is titanium-free and more biological, making it an excellent option for those who don’t want to have metals installed in their mouths.

This ceramic dental implant option has been increasingly sought after at Clinica Dentaria Implart by patients who want metal-free implant treatment.

Dental implant surgery can also be performed with intravenous sedation, for those patients who have a phobia of dentists, or even for those looking for extra comfort.

Is it dangerous to have dental implants? Dental implant surgery is a more straightforward procedure than you might think

Dental implant surgery is a safe procedure, and increasingly has more modern resources to make it faster and more comfortable. Here at Clinica Dentaria ImplArt, we have modern systems and expertise.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the implant procedure:

  • Step 1 – The procedure consists of making a small incision in the gum in order to expose the bone bed. The dentist needs to have good access to the area in order to install the implant correctly. If the dental implant surgery is performed with a Surgical Guide, it will be a blunt dental implant surgery
  • Step 2 – Small drills are then used to perforate the bone. The process is carried out in such a way as to progressively expand the cavity so that it can receive the implant of the size selected by the dentist.
  • Step 3 – The implant is then inserted into the cavity and given a protective cap.
  • Step 4 – The area is sutured, or in cases of Guided Surgery, the surgery is completed without the need for stitches.

Watch the video below explaining how dental implant surgery is performed:

Como é a cirurgia de implante dentário - dente unitário - Clínica em São Paulo - SP

In the classic implant treatment, the pin is surgically fixed into the bone and then the gum is sutured. The site is left to rest for around one to six months, depending on the type of implant used. The implant screw remains inside the bone tissue and must therefore undergo the osseointegration process, protected from chewing forces and food residue.

Shortly after the waiting period, a small cut is made in the gum and then the implant receives a piece called a healer, this process is called reopening. The implant cap can remain exposed in the mouth while the implant heals. Afterwards, the healer is removed without anesthesia (because it is not necessary), and a metal abutment is adapted to receive the prosthesis.

Recovery from dental implant surgery / after dentalimplants?

During the rest period, the patient can use a temporary prosthesis for day-to-day activities. This also helps prevent bone resorption, which would require the use of bone grafts in the future. In some selected cases, the implant can be inserted without cutting, through a small circular opening made in the gum.

This greatly favors the healing of the area as well as patient comfort. Implant surgery should be performed by a dentist specializing in implant dentistry, who certainly has the experience and knowledge in the field to determine the best treatment for each patient. In order to have a good post-operative period, people who undergo this procedure should follow the dentist’s instructions, take care of their oral hygiene and avoid smoking, which can compromise the success of dental implant treatment.

Fast dental implants treatment with Slactive implant + pure zirconia or pure porcelain prosthesis

Is it possible to carry out my dental implant treatment quickly and have the permanent prosthesis fitted straight away? This is a very common question and we understand this demand of fast dental implants. Nowadays, time is increasingly valuable and scarce, which leads to a need to complete dental treatment quickly.

First of all, it’s important to note that technology and modern techniques allow us to offer treatment with fast-healing implants, as well as completely computerized crowns and prostheses. We are talking specifically about the modern Straumann Slactive implant combined with Emax pure porcelain or Pure Zirconia prostheses .

So let’s take a closer look below and find out more about these modern dental implants. Fortunately, there are now several types of quality dental implant to choose from. All to make your implant treatment faster and more comfortable. If you’re short of time, try using rapid implants and the computerized prosthesis preparation system. With them, treatment is faster and more agile because it requires fewer treatment steps. In addition, treatment becomes more predictable and offers better technical and aesthetic results.

Fast healing dental implants: is there such a thing?

In recent years there has been a significant advance in dental implant technology. This is an expected movement, since each person has a specific demand, and implantologists and implant manufacturers need to respond to these demands. The demand for fast dental implant treatment is constant, precisely because of today’s lifestyle.

That’s why today we have implants available that cater, for example, for cases of low bone volume with short implants. Or those with high aesthetic needs(white ceramic dental implants). Or even those with a high need for bone and gum preservation(bone level implants).

Metal-free ceramic rapid dental implant

What’s more, for those patients who want metal-free dental implant treatment, we have a combination of ceramic implants and modern zirconia implant crowns. This ceramic implant not only has the benefit of no metal, but also offers rapid healing. In the case of this implant, osseointegration is expected to take 2 months. There are currently two types of ceramic implant, the first is Straumann’s Pure Ceramic implant, and the second is Neodent’s Zi white ceramic implant.

But another major demand from people is undoubtedly to speed up their oral rehabilitation by reducing the time it takes to install implants and a permanent fixed prosthesis. Pure zirconia crowns help to reduce the total treatment time.

implante slactive straumann, fast dental implants

After much research, Straumann has developed an implant surface technology called Slactive. It favors and accelerates osseintegration (a term that defines the healing and fixation of implants in the bone). In some cases, the healing period can be reduced from 6 to 1 month.

Recent studies show an excellent clinical performance of SLActive implants, both in single tooth implant treatments and in total implant treatments, and even in those using bone grafting. This is an option chosen by those patients who want a fast dental implant treatment, and are keen to use the latest technology for their implant treatment.

The definitive prosthesis is fixed in a short time after the placement of rapid implants. In some cases, implants can be immediately loaded

Oral rehabilitation with implants usually follows a timetable which, in short, is as follows step by step:

1 – Planning for dental implant surgery, with panoramic radiography and computed tomography. In many cases, an intraoral scan (digital reading) is already carried out to generate the first 3D-printed provisional prosthesis .

2 – Implant surgery. Implant surgery can be performed using the conventional technique, or through guided surgery, using the Surgical Guide, when the implant insertion sites are planned in advance. This way, once the implants have been inserted, there is no need for stitches. It is also called surgery without cuts.

3 – Installation of a temporary prosthesis, in the case of total implants or front tooth implants, which allows the patient to wait until the implants have completely healed. Dental implant healing can vary from 1 month to 4 months, depending on the type of implant chosen. It’s important to bear in mind that the chance of a successful dental implant is quite high, but it can be compromised if the patient is a smoker and doesn’t have good hygiene habits.

What happens when the implants have healed?

3 – Once the implants have healed, the process of making the final prosthesis begins, which can start with the stage of reopening thedental implants. If the type of prosthesis chosen is Emax Pure Porcelain or Pure Zirconia, the method for making the final prosthesis will be completely computerized.

4 – Installation of the final prosthesis. After this phase, which may involve making prototypes to study the color and shape of the new smile, the final prosthesis is installed on the chosen type of denture.

The use of Straumann Slactive implants means that, in some cases, the period of use of the provisional prosthesis can be reduced or even eliminated. Studies carried out by Straumann have already shown that the survival rate of the Slactive implant using the immediate loading technique after 10 years is 98.2%. This is the fastest dental implant available for those who want to speed up treatment.

What is Slactive surface technology for rapid dental implant treatment?

It is based on a sandblasting technique with large granules, which generates macro roughness on the titanium surface, followed by acid etching, which overlays the micro roughness. The resulting surface provides an ideal structure for the adhesion of bone-forming cells, which are necessary for osseointegration (integration between bone and implant). This amazing technology allows Straumann Slactive implants to be the fastest healing implants on the market.

Pure zirconia or pure porcelain prosthesis for rapid implants: the gold standard in complete oral rehabilitation

Many people have the perception that a porcelain or zirconia prosthesis is a heavy piece and therefore not suitable for quick installation because it would hinder the healing of implants. But contrary to what it might seem, porcelain prostheses are much lighter than you might think. In addition to being the most modern and resistant options for the patient, they are also aesthetically superior.

By way of comparison, a full porcelain prosthesis weighs around 30g, while a tube weighs 25g. In addition, each dental implant supports a weight of 100kg, meaning that the weight of the prosthesis does not interfere with the implant.

The possibility of having a permanent porcelain prosthesis fixed on dental implants is a great relief for people who are determined to change their smile quickly. And no wonder. Pure porcelain or pure zirconia are undoubtedly the most advanced materials available for the manufacture of dental prostheses.

Firstly, Pure Zirconia and Pure Porcelain are the materials that most closely resemble natural teeth, both in strength and appearance. Secondly, because these materials have been designed for fabrication in computerized systems (CAD/CAM), which greatly speeds up the entire programming of rapid dental implant treatment.

Can anyone have rapid treatment with Slactive implants and porcelain prostheses?

As we have seen, advanced technology means that many more people have an indication for rapid dental implant treatment. However, each case needs to be assessed individually in consultation. Undeniably, oral health and health in general need to be well assessed before anything else.

In addition, certain habits that may prevent successful rehabilitation, such as smoking and bruxism, need to be considered. If you would like to have a treatment like this or find out more about rapid dental implants, please contact our team. Alternatively, you can schedule a consultation via Whatsapp by clicking on the button below. We at Clinica odontológica ImplArt would be delighted to hear from you!

Pre- and post-operative care of dental implants

Dental implant recovery and care of dental implants before and after surgery

The post-operative period for dental implants and the preparation before dental implant surgery are certainly fundamental to the success of the procedure. We have therefore prepared recommendations for patients who are going to have a dental implant, which can also be applied to minor dental surgery.

We should certainly point out that the care of dental implant surgery is considered a simple and minor intervention from a medical point of view, with low risk for the patient. The duration of surgery is short and recovery after implant surgery is also considered to be easy for the patient, even in cases of complete oral rehabilitation.

Recommendations before dental implant surgery

What should I do before a dental implant?

  • Eat normally before the procedure if the surgery involves local anesthesia. If you have opted for sedation, follow the specific guidelines for your case, which may involve fasting.
  • Take the prescribed medication 1 hour before arriving at the clinic. If indicated for your case, preferably come accompanied by someone who can drive.
Pre- and post-operative dental implants
care of dental implants
Stitches for dental implants should be removed between 7 and 10 days.

After implant surgery – care of dental implants urgery

What should I do after dental implants, after implant surgery (for 48 hours)?

  • Apply ice to the face to prevent swelling
  • Avoid physical exertion
  • Sanitize the area with a cotton swab moistened with an antiseptic solution (Periogard, Listerine, Plax).
  • Prefer soft or pasty foods
  • Normal brushing of other teeth
  • Wear prostheses or braces for as short a time as possible
  • Take medication as directed by the dentist

What I can’t do after an immediate dental implant (48 hours)

What to eat after dental implant surgery?

  • For 2 days: you should eat cold or iced food. For example: ice cream, jelly, juices, smoothies, soups.
  • Also avoid hard, crunchy foods such as bread, peanuts, etc.
  • On the third day you can warm up the food more and normalize your diet according to your own tolerance

What can I do 3 days after my dental implant?

  • Apply warm compresses to the face to reduce swelling
  • Exercise in moderation

Tip: In cases where a surgical guide has been used to install the implants, the expected post-operative period is milder than in normal implant surgeries.

What can I do one week after my dental implant?

  • Brush the operated area lightly
  • Mouthwash with antiseptic solution
  • Physical activity released
  • Remove the stitches at the dentist

Are there implants without cutting or stitches/care of dental implants?

There are modern computer-guided planning techniques that minimize the need to cut into the gums and therefore often do not require stitches. This is computer-guided dental implant surgery, a very up-to-date and safe procedure for implant surgery.

Frequently asked questions about post-operative implants:

Is dental implant post-op swelling normal? What is the post-operative period of implants like?

Swelling can occur in the first few days after implants, which is why anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed to be taken as soon as necessary. Cold food and ice help to reduce swelling in the mouth.

How long does it take to resume physical activity after a dental implant?

Each case is assessed individually, but in general you should wait 7 to 10 days before returning to the gym in full.

How many days to remove the dental implant stitches?

On average, you should remove the stitches from the implant surgery within 7 to 10 days.

Is it normal to feel pain after a dental implant or bone graft?

Pain can occur after the placement of a dental implant or bone graft. For this reason, painkillers are prescribed to be taken as soon as necessary. In general, the pain is mild and can be controlled with painkillers, but it is not normal to experience severe or unbearable pain.

What should I do if I feel throbbing pain after a dental implant?

Mild, bearable throbbing can occur after dental bone grafting and implants. However, if the discomfort is too great and does not stop with medication, the patient should contact their dentist as soon as possible.

Tooth replacement in 1 month with rapid implants and DayClinic

Rapid tooth replacement with dental implants

It is possible to replace a tooth by installing a dental implant with a CAD/CAM-designed crown within 1 month, in selected cases. This is possible because the ImplArt Dental Clinic works with Straumann Slactive implants. They have surface technology that favors and accelerates healing and the biological interaction between implants and bone (osseointegration).

A case of root fracture, for example, would require a dental implant as soon as possible, along with extraction. Successful osseointegration is what guarantees the stability of the implant to support the prosthesis and the masticatory load over the years. With normal implants, osseointegration usually occurs between 6 and 8 months. With Straumann Slactive implants, this time can be reduced to 3 to 4 weeks.

Will I lose a tooth during implant healing?

During this healing period, the patient wears a temporary prosthesis so as not to be left without a tooth. In the meantime, our prosthetics laboratory carries out the digital CAD/CAM design and manufacture of the definitive prosthesis using 3D printers. The design begins with a digital mold that is taken using an intraoral scanner, an intraoral camera that captures precise images of the patient’s mouth.

See more about single-tooth implants: Single-tooth implants

tooth replacement with dental implant and CAD/CAM crown

From these three-dimensional images, it is possible to design a prosthesis with the perfect fit and shape for tooth replacement. The prosthesis is made using a 3D printer. It can be made of porcelain, a very resistant, aesthetic material comparable to natural human teeth, and with a metal or zirconia internal structure.

Some people prefer to come twice to our clinic in a stage protocol for Implants instead of coming only once. This happens because if you stay for the full length of the treatment, you need to stay at least one month in Brazil but instead, if you choose a stage treatment you can come normally for one week and go back home. Then, after a few months, when you have availability, you can come again for another week and finish your work.

Find out more about our digital prosthetics laboratory.

It is worth noting that the possibility of tooth replacement with implant installation, gum grafting or bone grafting, with the definitive prosthesis in just 1 month, is only possible in selected cases.

An assessment by our specialized team will determine this possibility taking into account certain characteristics, such as bone volume and general state of health (in general, as well as of the teeth and gums).

The patient’s age can also influence the planning of dental implants. The rapid installation of a dental implant with a permanent crown for tooth replacement restores chewing ability, smile aesthetics and confidence in speaking and smiling.

Alternatives to dental implants for tooth replacement

As an alternative to implants, we can use dental prostheses in some cases. Adhesive dentures are a way of replacing a missing tooth. The main feature of this prosthesis is that it is attached to neighboring teeth using metal fins and dental adhesive.

If you have any questions about tooth replacement with dental implants, treatments for bruxism or average prices, please make an appointment or contact us. We’ll be happy to help you.

Fixed dental prosthesis in pure 3D translucent zirconia

Among the latest material options for making a fixed prosthesis for a full arch implant, total implant or protocol prosthesis, we now have an innovative technique full of advantages: 3D pure translucent zirconia. Zirconia is currently the most modern material for both full and partial dental implant prostheses. It is also the most suitable material for dental crowns on single implants or fixed prostheses.

Zirconia dentures combine beauty and strength

Pure zirconia is also known as cubic zirconia, translucent zirconia, monolithic zirconia and black zirconia. It is currently considered the most modern and resistant material for making dental crowns.

Dental prostheses made from this material are fixed onto dental implants previously placed in the upper or lower jaw.

In order to offer patients the most modern treatments, the ImplArt dental clinic has once again innovated by pioneering the best European technology (Austria) to manufacture 3D zirconia dental prostheses in its own laboratory.

Its modern manufacturing allows treatment to be carried out using 100% computerized techniques, with complete digital planning of the case. This means more comfortable treatment for the patient, much more predictable, and above all, faster.

Translucent Zirconia
The translucent zirconia protocol prosthesis is completely white and contains no metal inside. As a result, the colors and shapes are more beautiful and natural.

Planning 3D zirconia implant/prosthesis treatment

For a complete treatment with dental implants, there must first be an extensive conversation between the dental surgeon and the patient. The definition of the total treatment takes place in 3 stages:

  • 1- Firstly: Planning the surgical and prosthetic aspects of the all-tooth or partial implant case. First of all, the patient’s needs are studied, with a clinical assessment and radiological examinations, so that the case can be planned precisely before it is carried out.
  • 2- Secondly: Performing the surgery to install the dental implants. At this point, a temporary transition prosthesis for the full arch should also be installed.
  • 3- Thirdly: Preparation of the final dental prosthesis. Once the implants have healed, the long-awaited making of the complete prosthesis begins, according to the material chosen by the patient at the start of their treatment.
Gumless dental zirconia prosthesis.
Zirconia dental prosthesis without gums. In some cases it is possible to make a zirconia dental prosthesis without the pink gum layer. In an acrylic dental protocol this would not be possible.

Not all protocol prostheses are the same and made of acrylic!

The choice of implant prosthesis material

Nowadays, you can choose from a variety of materials for fixed prostheses on implants (dental protocols). In the past, there were only metal-ceramics (metal structure and porcelain exterior) and acrylic (resin), made by hand.

Today, ImplArt is able to offer patients options with extreme resistance and superior aesthetics, such as computer-engineered translucent zirconia. In this sense, each type of prosthetic material can have an impact on the patient’s treatment in terms of price, preparation time and the final aesthetics of the total implant.

Therefore, in this article, we will explain the most modern model of fixed prosthesis on implants: the computerized translucent zirconia prosthesis, as well as its advantages and characteristics.

What is 3D dental zirconia? Zirconia is a white material that has the strength of a metal

Protese dentaria zirconia projeto computador sobreposicao 50kb
Zirconia dental prosthesis being designed on a computer, with a photo of the face superimposed. This gives us additional information about the lips, skin and gum colors, the shape of the teeth and the final appearance of the smile.

Types of zirconia prosthesis for dental protocols

Today there are three types of dental zirconia to better perform protocol prostheses on implants (fixed dental prostheses), namely :

  • 1. milky whitezirconia structure (lower volume), together with applied porcelain overlay (higher volume)
  • 2. 3Dtranslucent zirconia prosthesis (larger volume), i.e. with a small application of porcelain on the outside of the teeth (smaller volume)
  • 3.3D monolithic pure zirconia prosthesis (full volume) with make-up, so no additional porcelain applied
zirconia prosthesis being manufactured
The aesthetics of aesthetic zirconia fixed prostheses are unbeatable. Notice how translucent the material is and how beautiful and natural it looks.

What does the 3D translucent pure zirconia implant prosthesis look like?

In this type of zirconia prosthesis, there is only a small porcelain overlay on the structural part of the prosthesis. In short, the entire final process of making the monolithic zirconia prosthesis is done by computer programs and robotic machines( Digital Dentistry).

Therefore, we are sure that the fittings will be perfect, the anatomy will be that of natural teeth, and the colors will be realistic.

zirconia and translucency prosthesis
Dental zirconia protocol. Note that there is a small layer of translucent porcelain on the outside of the tooth to give it more shine, better color and more translucency. The rest of the prosthesis is solid and made of pure zirconia that has been tinted to match the natural color of the tooth and gums. The holes will be closed after the fixed prosthesis has been installed.

Advantages of the 3D zirconia protocol prosthesis

In contrast to metal as a structure, the main advantages of translucent zirconia are its biocompatibility, excellent aesthetics and extreme resistance. Zirconia, with the white structural part of the dental prosthesis, undeniably enhances the natural cosmetic characteristics of porcelain.

In fact, dental zirconia is exceptionally strong and durable as a base. So much so that the use of small portions of porcelain over this translucent zirconia structure provides complementary aesthetics for the complete implant.

In addition, zirconia is a super biocompatible and anti-allergenic material and is also used in white dental implant posts.

zirconia dental prosthesis internal structure
The structure of the zirconia dental prosthesis is white and, at this stage, not yet colored or shiny. In the next phase of the prosthetic work in our dental laboratory, the piece will come to life with the pigmentation of teeth and gums. The final colors depend on the consensus between the person’s taste and the dentist’s opinion. However, you can virtually choose any color from the available range. The most commonly used shades for porcelain zirconia teeth are B1, A1, BL4, A2, B2. For the gums, we try to follow the color of the patient’s natural gums, with the most common colors being STG4, STG5 and STG8.
Work on applying layers of ceramic. In the end, all the natural aspects of the teeth and gums will be reproduced, imitating their tones, textures and translucency.

Superior aesthetics of 3DZirconia

Dental zirconia can be custom-made in such a way that it resembles the enamel and gum tissues, thus optimizing the aesthetic result.

Translucent dental zirconia is undeniably the best material for fixed prostheses on implants, as it offers translucency, naturalness and strength as a result.

First of all, it should be noted that the zirconia protocol prosthesis makes no noise when chewed, is not heavy, nor does it damage dental implants, and certainly not opposing teeth.

Translucent dental zirconia is a material that above all does not change color, does not stain and therefore does not wear out with use.

How are 3D translucent zirconia dentures made?

The ImplArt Clinic has all the infrastructure to make your zirconia fixed prosthesis in its own laboratory. Here’s how it works: a zirconia dental prosthesis is manufactured using computerized processes, starting with the milling of a solid block of zirconia.

Above all, because it is a CAD-CAM (computerized) job, your dental project is stored in our laboratory, so the original project can be printed again quickly, should the need arise.

Dental prostheses: versions with or without artificial gum are possible (but it depends on an examination to check feasibility). 1-Without gum layer; 2-Light gum layer; 3-With gum layer.

Maintenance of fixed 3D translucent zirconia dental implants

First and foremost, zirconia is extremely resistant and is certainly the strongest material for dental use. As such, its resistance is superior to porcelain and, of course, resin.

Maintenance for a zirconia prosthesis involves a visit to the dentist every 6 months for prophylaxis, in order to monitor oral health in the same way as recommended for all other patients.

The risk of the prosthesis fracturing is, above all, very rare, due to a characteristic of the material.

With regard to the color and shape of the teeth, these remain unchanged over time, making the material an excellent choice for its durability and, above all, long-term aesthetics.

It is always important to remember that, once treatment is complete, you should visit your dentist every 6 months for prophylaxis and to monitor the results of your treatment.

Total Implantation . Implantation of all teeth

Total dental implants can be implanted in both the mandible (lower arch) and maxilla (upper arch), although there are important anatomical differences that interfere with the planning of dental implant surgery. Fixed prostheses on dental implants can be made of Zirconia, Pure Zirconia, Porcelain(metal-ceramic), as well as Resin, called a protocol prosthesis. This type of implant treatment for all teeth, also called a total dental implant with protocol, allows patients to regain their smile and chew.

Dental implant surgery is currently a fairly straightforward operation, carried out in an office or hospital environment, with hospitalization for the patient’s comfort. Implants make it possible to replace missing teeth even in large areas of the arch, including in patients with all their teeth compromised by periodontal disease.
They can also be used in patients with bone loss, who may need bone grafting before or during the installation of the dental implant.

It is important to note that there are currently different types of dental implants, and the most modern ones, cone morse implants, allow for faster healing.

Total Implantation . Implanting all teeth step by step

With regard to the end result, the aim is to obtain fixed dental prostheses that will remain supported on the implants. This will allow the patient to regain their masticatory function and aesthetics.

Of course, as protocol prostheses are screwed onto dental implants, the result is a very efficient dental prosthesis for chewing, as well as excellent aesthetics and comfort.

It is therefore a much better solution than a removable prosthesis, as it provides excellent fixation and stability. In the upper arch, the total implant has the added advantage of completely uncovering the palate (roof of the mouth), which improves patient comfort.

Unlike removable prostheses (dentures), which cover the roof of the mouth to allow them to be fixed and make it difficult to perceive the taste of food, prostheses on implants are thin and occupy only the region of the dentition, leaving the rest of the mouth free, similar to the situation found when there are natural teeth. Currently, the most modern materials are the Zirconia protocol and the porcelain protocol on a total implant.

Protocol prosthesis

This type of treatment is usually also called a Protocol Prosthesis. Although, from a technical point of view, this name is only used when the prosthesis is made of resin, the nomenclature is widely used to identify this treatment.

Total Implantation .Examinations and planning

After radiographic examinations and a CT scan of the jaws, the dental implant specialist will be able to analyze the ideal planning for the case and thus indicate bone complements such as grafts to better prepare the bone if necessary.

The jaw bone (lower arch) is more rigid and resistant, so dental implants can be installed in most cases. The upper jaw bone, on the other hand, is less dense and delicate and has a more complex anatomy.

Certainly the proximity to the nose, the maxillary sinus cavities and the greater bone loss require further study.

Total Implantation . With or without Graft ?

If bone grafting is necessary, don’t be alarmed – it’s very common. Of course, dental grafting for full implants is not necessarily complicated, invasive or large. On the contrary, most of the time the bone graft for a full arch implant is simple, small and restricted to the position of the implant.

Less invasive implant surgery: in our clinic we use current concepts of minimally invasive surgery for dental implants, which make the procedure faster and offer greater comfort during the procedure and especially during the healing phase of the dental implant.

Computer-guided implant surgery: this is a type of dental implant surgery offered at our clinic that is planned by computerized scans of the jaws.

For example, computed tomography, in conjunction with a digital mold of the arch (scanner), generates guides for the quick and safe positioning of implants. Click here to learn more about guided surgery for total implants.

Total Implants . Protocol Prosthesis and other types

Certainly the most common prosthesis for implanting all the teeth in a full arch is the so-called protocol prosthesis. This is a resin prosthesis with a metal reinforcement bar inside.

Over time, however, more modern ways of making complete implant prostheses have emerged. At the ImplArt Dental Clinic, we offer more technological implant materials, which are completely made on our premises and in our own dental prosthesis laboratory (see more):

High-tech Straumann dental implants in Brazil

A dental implant is a titanium or all-ceramic pin that has a similar function to a tooth root, i.e. to provide support for the teeth. Over the years, dental implants have been developed with different shapes and compositions, in order to always seek better initial stabilization and durability throughout life. Currently, the fastest implant option is the Slactive dental implant version with rapid healing of 1 month. This means that one month after implant surgery, the final crown can be fitted.

We certainly can’t fail to mention the modern ceramic dental implant which, combined with the pure 3D zirconia crown, is the complete combination for metal-free oral rehabilitation. This treatment is especially suitable for people who are looking for excellence in aesthetic results, both when choosing dental implants and prostheses. In addition, it can be used for those patients who want to avoid the use of metals due to an allergic condition.

This option is gaining more and more ground as many patients want to eliminate the use of metal in their arches, either out of preference or even medical restrictions. There are currently several types of implant, each with its own characteristics, making it easier to choose according to the patient’s wishes. Let’s find out more about this very modern white implant option, which has allowed one version of the implant to be made of titanium.

Some high-tech implant models

The ImplArt Dental Clinic in Brazil only works with high-tech implants, including Straumann Swiss implants (which are widely considered to be the best in the world). Straumann offers a wide range of implants in a variety of shapes, diameters and lengths to meet a wide range of needs in implant dentistry.

Straumann Roxolid implants

Implants of reduced length and diameter, they are suitable for people with bone defects who do not want or cannot undergo bone grafting procedures. They are composed of a high-performance alloy, specifically designed above all to provide greater strength than pure titanium. They have excellent bone integration capacity.

Straumann Pure Ceramic Implants

Ivory-colored all-ceramic implants, so they resemble the shade of the tooth roots. They can be a treatment option for more apparent areas of the arch or patients with very thin gums. They can also be an option for treating patients who are sensitive to metals such as nickel.

Straumann Bone Level Implants

They have an internal prosthetic abutment connection, thus reducing manipulation of the gingival tissues. For this reason, they can be a treatment option for more apparent areas of the arches, as they provide a more aesthetic result.

Straumann SLA implants

They have a rough surface technology that provides an ideal structure for the adhesion of cells that stimulate and therefore accelerate the osseointegration process (bone formation and stabilization around the implant).

Straumann SLActive implants

They have surface technology that stimulates and accelerates the osseointegration process (bone formation and stabilization around the implant). They have a hydrophilic surface for the formation of blood clots in the implant.

The hydrophilic and chemically active properties of the SLActive surface provide a larger accessible surface area for greater absorption of blood proteins and formation of the fibrin network.

These are ideal conditions for blood clots to form and for the healing process to begin. All Straumann implants are made from safe materials that are certainly biocompatible with the human body.

High-tech dental implants – Advantages?

Tooth loss can lead to aesthetic, functional and bone problems, so a quick replacement is essential. More advantages:

Dental implants – Contraindications (each case is assessed individually)

  • In patients with general health problems
  • When there is not enough bone to place the implant (can be solved with bone grafting techniques)

Dental implants: how are they done?

The titanium implants are installed into the bone through a small operation in the dental office, under local anesthesia. Once the dental implant is in place, it takes an average of 1 to 4 months to adhere to the bone (osseointegration), depending on the type of implant chosen.

In some high-tech Straumann implant models, osseointegration can occur in less time. Therefore, after this period, the molds for the installation of the fixed prosthesis on the implants can begin.

In some selected cases, the prosthesis can be placed on the same day as the surgery with immediate loading. If you have any questions, please contact us or make an appointment. We at ImplArt Implants Clinic will be happy to help you!

Metal-free white zirconia dental implant

ImplArt Dental Clinic brings you another great novelty: the Zirconia implant, a highly biocompatible and resistant white ceramic.

The zirconia implant is a revolutionary innovation in the field of dentistry, offering an aesthetic and biocompatible alternative to traditional titanium implants. In addition to being metal-free, zirconia implants have a natural white color that resembles the root of the tooth, providing a more harmonious visual result, especially in aesthetic areas.

This advanced zirconia implant technology also offers benefits in terms of strength and durability, making it an excellent choice for patients looking for a functional and discreet solution for replacing missing teeth.

Zirconia implants – all-ceramic

This is one of the most modern dental implants, PURE Ceramic, developed by the Swiss company Straumann. Straumann’s PURE Ceramic implants are made from totally resistant zirconia. It is the most modern dental implant available today, as it is the only non-titanium option, ideal for those looking for metal-free treatment.

Zirconia implant indications

Certainly, the absence of metals in its composition, the ivory shade (similar to the color of human tooth roots) as well as the absence of sparkling reflections, characterize this implant as an aesthetic alternative in cases where the patient has very thin or atrophied gums, especially when these conditions occur in the anterior region (the most visible part of the arch). It is therefore an excellent option for those looking for a dental implant treatment with the best aesthetics available.

Thus, by combining the use of a zirconia implant with a computerized porcelain dental crown, Emax 3D Pure Porcelain or Pure Zirconia, the patient can achieve natural aesthetics, without any presence of metals.

In addition, they have been developed with ZLA technology, similar to SLA, which favors and accelerates the osseointegration process, important for speedy treatment and the success of the implant, as well as its stabilization.

Above all, it is important to note that Straumann’s PURE Ceramic implants have undergone rigorous scientific research before being introduced to the market. Each implant is mechanically tested before being supplied to the dentist.

This quality is guaranteed by a world leader in scientific research and the development of solutions for implant dentistry.

Using a zirconia implant is an option in cases of allergies or major aesthetic needs

In addition to their natural color, Straumann Pure Ceramic implants have a surface developed with ZLA technology, similar to SLA, which favors and accelerates the osseointegration process, important for the success and stabilization of the implant.

The implant has the color of a natural tooth, because it has no sparkling reflections, and is very useful in cases of thin or atrophied gums. This makes it possible to obtain a natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing end result, especially for application in the anterior region (the most visible part of the arch).

In these images of a surgery carried out in our clinic with a zirconium dental implant, the aesthetic nature of the material can be seen. After initial gum healing, bone healing begins, which takes an average of 2 months. After this time, the porcelain crown can be fitted over the implant.

The best types of dental crowns to complement these ceramic implants are the Pure Porcelain Crown, and the translucent zirconia crown, both made in our in-house dental laboratory.

What is the healing time for zirconia dental implants?

The recovery period for the Straumann Pure zirconia implant can vary, depending on several factors, including the patient’s oral health and the type of procedure performed.

After implant surgery, the gums around the implant site need time to recover. This usually takes two to four weeks, but can vary according to the patient’s individual response.

In addition, the process of osseointegration, which is when the bone fuses to the implant, is a crucial part of recovery. Specifically for the Straumann Zirconia implant, osseointegration can occur between 2 and 6 months, while in the case of the ZI implant (Neodent) it can take 3 to 6 months to fully integrate.

Remember, each case is unique and recovery time can vary. It is always important for us to examine the patient in order to offer personalized advice.
