The lack of a tooth, usually lost as a result of an accident or damaged by decay, can be easily replaced by implanting a tooth (which works like a tooth root) and fixing a dental crown (which imitates the color and shape of the natural tooth) onto this dental implant. This treatment is called single tooth implant.
Most of the time, the surgery is very simple and quick and, depending on the type of implant chosen, the patient can be rehabilitated with the final definitive prosthesis in just a few months. This applies to both single and total implants.
The loss of one tooth leads to problems with the other teeth
Dental implants are certainly an effective solution for restoring the aesthetics and functionality of the smile. The absence of a tooth can compromise the aesthetics of the smile, but also its functionality. Missing teeth trigger bone resorption at the site, which can be prevented by implanting a single tooth. Bone loss varies from person to person, but in advanced cases it can unbalance dental occlusion.
In this way, neighboring and opposing teeth can move. For example, a person loses a back tooth in the lower arch and doesn’t replace it. The opposing upper tooth, which until then made contact with the lower tooth, loses its support and tends to move downwards over time. Dental malocclusion facilitates the development of problems such as plaque build-up, tooth decay and TMJ dysfunction. Therefore, the single loss of a tooth can lead to imbalances in neighboring teeth, and needs to be addressed with a dental implant.

Clinical History
Our clinical director holds a doctorate in implant dentistry, a master’s degree in prosthodontics, and two specializations in dental implants and prosthodontics. In addition, he has completed several training courses in the field of dentistry, not only in Brazil, but also abroad.

Scientific History Dr. Roberto Markarian
Dr. Roberto Markarian graduated as a dental surgeon in 2001 from the USP School of Dentistry in São Paulo. While still a student, he carried out research into improving dental materials, particularly in the areas of dentistry, prosthodontics and implantology. As aresult of this work, he received 5 awards in Brazil. He described his results in more than 30 scientific articles, which were later published in international journals.
In the meantime, he has taken postgraduate courses in prosthetics and dental implants and has become a researcher and assistant to the fixed prosthetics team at USP (São Paulo)and at the São Leopoldo Mandic College (Campinas), as well as teaching college students and dentists.
In the area of academic research, Dr. Roberto Markarian has been conducting courses and research in the area of implant dentistry since 1998, and in the area of digital dentistry since 2004. He also gives lectures and training courses on modern digital dentistry tools.

The post and core is an important part for installing a prosthetic crown to replace a tooth that has been badly destroyed, usually as a result of decay or fractures. In cases where it is possible to preserve the root with root canal treatment, the core is installed inside the root to support the prosthetic crown.
The core is the internal reinforcement part of a dental crown
This is an important stage in providing support and strength to the porcelain dental crown. See more about dental core materials. If the crown were installed without a core, the prosthesis would probably not be able to withstand the masticatory effort and consequently its duration would be shorter.
See also this article on our blog which talks a little more about root canal treatment, core and porcelain crown. Today, the reinforcement core (dental post) can be made from various types of materials: from metal to zirconia, fiberglass and carbon fiber.
The choice of material depends on a number of factors, such as the location in the dental arch and the masticatory load that the crown will be subjected to.
The metal core is considered more resistant (especially suitable for the most hidden and used area of the arch), while zirconia is considered more aesthetic because it is white (suitable for the most visible area, i.e. the front of the arch).
The prosthetic crown can be made from two different materials: resin (plastic with a metal core) or porcelain (with a metal or aesthetic core). Porcelain is more resistant and aesthetic than resin.
In some cases, root canal treatment is performed to preserve the root;
The root and tooth are prepared to receive the core;
When made of metal, the impression is taken directly inside the root;
When in zirconia, the post is cemented into the root;
A core mold is taken to prepare the prosthetic crown. At ImplArt, this mold can be made conventionally (with putty) or digitally using intraoral scanners;
The crown is installed on the core;
The duration of the procedure varies, as it depends on the complexity of each case. For some people it can be carried out in a Day Clinic.

There are different materials that can be used to build a dental prosthesis, the main ones being: resin with a metal internal structure (metalloplastics/Branemark protocol), ceramic with a metal internal structure (metalloceramics) and the most aesthetic option which is ceramic with a metal-free dental zirconia internal structure (metal free).

The evolution of aesthetic dentures
Most total or partial infrastructures are made with metal alloys that play the role of mechanical and functional support. However, their dark color can compromise the final aesthetics, especially in areas that are more apparent and important to patients.
As a result, metal-free ceramic structures are gaining ground, mainly because they achieve a more aesthetic result and because of their biocompatibility, resistance and stability.
Dental ceramics and zirconia are considered the most advanced materials because they do not contain metals in their composition, which provides an aesthetic dental prosthesis that is much more similar to natural teeth.
Zirconia teeth can be single, bridged or full-arch, installed on teeth or on dental implants.
A zirconia dental prosthesis is made to perfectly mimic dental and gum tissues. Above, the zirconia prosthesis designed, and below, the prosthesis installed. Both the color and the shape were designed individually and jointly between the patient and the implant dentist.
Dental zirconia is a white, resistant ceramic material used to build the structure of the prosthesis. A layer of porcelain is applied to this structure, which makes the prosthesis similar to natural teeth in terms of translucency, texture and shade.
As zirconia is white, the prosthesis has a similar shade and translucency to natural teeth, even when exposed to light.
New types of more translucent dental zirconia allow for the complete fabrication of dental prostheses by computer, without the need to apply porcelain manually.
The shade of zirconia is comparable to natural human dentin. In contrast, the same result cannot be achieved with a prosthesis containing a metal framework.
This is because bone and gum changes naturally occur over the years, and this remodeling can expose a small portion of the metal of the prosthesis and thus cause aesthetic damage to the smile.
Another advantage of zirconia is that prostheses made from this material are completely computer-engineered and executed on 3D printers using Cad/Cam systems. This allows prostheses to be made more quickly and accurately.
